City of Hartford, Connecticut
Like many local governments, the City of Hartford is making its services more accessible through mobile devices. To build these apps, along with a new generation of computer programmers, Hartford partners with Trinity College instructors and the Connecticut Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association. Together, these organizations host an intensive summer program for high school students – the students learn both technical and communications skills as they work with real clients to build apps for city government organizations.
This project shows how the core NPFI mission of facilitating collaborative, humanitarian, open source software development can be realized in many different ways. Here, the college instructors are working with high school students to create new software tools to enable a local government to improve citizen access to city services.
